Judge banned the planting of Monsanto's GM sugar beets pending more detailed environmental studies. Since regular sugar beets seeds are widely available, this won't affect our sugar supply or drive costs up.
It's about time someone stood up to Monsanto and told them they haven't adequately considered environmental impact. If Monsanto had done their modified their GM seeds correctly, there would have never been a perceived need on Monsanto's part to sue farmers who crops were accidentally cross-pollinated with Monsanto GM plants. I consider the farmers the victim here - not only did their perfectly good crop get contaminated by pollination from a GM crop, they were then sued by Monsanto for "stealing" the GM plants. I deplore the judges who ruled in Monsanto's favor in those cases because I considered it Monsanto's fault to allow their modified seeds to be set in fields where they would be very likely to pollinate non-Monsanto crops.
