I suppose it's because I have Itzl with me all the time, but people will tell me the most horrible stories about their pets.
There's the woman who told me she had her dog neutered because he got a tumor in that area when the dog was 14, and now he drags his back leg and it always bleeds when she takes him on their long daily walks "because dogs need to be walked" and he's lost a lot of weight, and she guesses he's just old and dying.
Then there was the man who said his ferret had bad diarrhea and wondered if it was worth it to take the critter to the vet, or if he should just kill it.
Or the man whose kitty got something caught in her paw, and it was all swollen up and she wouldn't walk on it any more, and now she wasn't eating, and he guessed she was just going to die, and oh well, that's what happens when you get attached to a critter, it just up and dies on you for no reason.
And these are the least horrible things they tell me.
The worst stories are always prefaced by "I used to have this...." and I want to scream and cover my ears and shout, "Don't tell me!" but they do, anyway, telling of the horrible, horrible things that happened to their little dog or cat or ferret or hamster, dreadful suffering and deaths that could have easily (and often cheaply) been prevented or avoided or fixed.
Much as I hate PETA, I sort of agree that most people shouldn't have pets.
Of course, I feel most people shouldn't have children, either, and for much the same reasons - they are too stupid to take decent care of their children or their pets and should never be entrusted with the care of either.
On really bad days, I feel these callous people shouldn't even be breathing, let alone talking to me.
