Apparently, in England, the soccer players are wearing neck coverings and the fans are unsure what to call them.
"Snood" seems to be a default name, but "snood" means hair net or hair band, not a neck warmer.
"Cowl" has also been used, and would seem appropriate if it were looser and could be pulled up as a hood, too.
I think they should do a simple OED search. They would discover several terms far more appropriate than "snood": choker, guimpe (pronounced "gamp"), weld, ascot, or cinch, for example. Cowl is an acceptable name for this piece of apparel, even if they aren't exactly cowls as they currently exist. Guimpe, cinch, and ascot all seem far better choices than "snood".
Although they'll probably take the lazy route and keep calling it a snood.
They have no sense of veriloquy. None at all.
