OK, like all stories, it would benefit from even more re-writes and edits, but I think if I tweak and fiddle with it even more, I'll end up destroying it at this point.
It's a nice story - not profound, not life-altering, but a fun read (I think) with a couple of characters I'd like to know better.
I think I've evoked the spirit of the era (steampunkish) and I know I've not read of this idea anywhere else. I could be wrong about that, because, ya duh! I haven't read everything, but it's not a common trope, so maybe it will interest others.
What facts I have in the story (precious few!) are accurate. I don't have any obviously steam-driven apparatuses, but I do have the aether, and blimps, and a piratey type of opportunist.
I think I am going to go ahead and submit it. The worst anyone can say is "no" and that's not so bad.
There is the entire middle ground, which is chancier, in my opinion: the "maybe if you did this and that" or the dreaded "doesn't quite meet expectations".
And then there's the terrifying "Yes, but".
I'm pretty sure the best I can expect is the terrifying "yes, but".
I won't know unless I submit it, will I?
