I've always said Palin was more celebrity than politician and her employment by Fox News simply suppots that.
It makes sense for a news outlet to take advantage of Palin's controversial popularity to boost ratings and earn more money. I'm only surprised it took so long. Or perhaps, it took so long only because Palin was negotiating the best possible offer for her personally. That wouldn't surprise me - Palin has always had her own best interests at heart before anyone else's: her family's, her state's, or her country's. It's why I've always contended Palin was a celebrity, kind of like Paris.
McCain may have sunk his presidential campaign by choosing her as his running mate, but it was the best, most opportunistic event in her life. Without McCain propelling her into the national and international spotlight as he did, she would have remained an unknown, minor politician up in Alaska. She would never have had the chance to become the celebrity she is today.
I can't say that I really blame her for using her insta-fame to increase her personal fortunes. For her, it's all about "I, me, mine" and she loves to get into name-calling dirty fights (if her behavior is any indication). That kind of attitude makes for good celebrity fodder; many people love watching trainwrecks. Palin's excellent at that whole celebrity thing.
She's never had a good grasp of being a politician. She doesn't have the ability to be comfortable in every situation, she's far too quick to respond in anger to trivial things and resonds inappropriately to larger things. Instead of using attacks against her to further political goals, she's chosen to become embroiled in petty name-calling with her attackers. While this is marvelous for celebrities, it's disastrous to politicians.
I'm all for Palin pursuing a career as a celebrity. She's got all the makings of a good one.
I just hope she remembers this, and stays out of politics.
