As a trained herbal apothecary, I can tell you that using nutmeg to secure a "high" is far more unpleasant than the minor buzz one might get from it.
I'm not putting this behind a cut because even though it's "adult" material, it's also very important.
The quantity of nutmeg required to achieve even a mild buzz is enormous, and 99% of the people who try it will get violently ill long before they get a hint of a buzz. The other 1% dies. If you survive your encounter with attempting to use nutmeg to get high, what you will get are severe abdominal cramping pains, dizziness, out-of-control vomiting, dry mouth, and heart palpitations that can last a week or longer. The few who do manage to get a buzz will still experience the cramps, vomiting, palpitations, and for what? A minor buzz that isn't any better than the buzz one gets off caffeine or being really stoked over seeing a friend or attending a movie. It's that kind of a minor buzz.
It doesn't matter if you try to chug it, smoke it, or snort it.
Oh, and if you smoke it - it's far more damaging to your lungs than smoking the strong Turkish cigarettes without filters. The amount of nutmeg needed to get mildly high could leave you with emphysema for the rest of your life.
And if you snort as much as you need to get a light buzz - it eats away the soft tissues in your sinuses without ever getting you anywhere near that proverbial high people seek from it - leaving you with chronic sinusitis.
Myristicin, the hallucinogenic compound in nutmeg, does indeed provide a lengthy hallucinating high. It's just not very accessible in nutmeg - and you need LOTS of nutmeg to get a usable quantity of myristicin, way more than a human body can handle.
If someone tells you nutmeg can get you high, laugh at them and walk away. There are far more accessible, safe, and pleasant highs.
May I suggest an awesome movie, a radical roller coaster ride, paragliding, scuba diving, race car driving, dancing, finishing NaNoWriMo, shopping, or drinking coffee with friends - the high you get from any of these activities will be far greater than any high you can get off nutmeg - and will probably not get you to the ER in agonizing misery.
And if those highs seem tame and lame to you, then don't you think that nutmeg's high, which is less than those highs, is even lamer?
As the article says, if you are stupid enough to try nutmeg as a high and live, you won't do it a second time.
